You can clean your sinuses in a simple Yogic way with Jal Neti. Jal Neti: Helps to cleanse the respiratory system. It is one of the 6 Shatkarma methods or the purifying procedures to cleanse your nasal passage.

Jal Neti Yogic Kriya helps to remove the impurities in respiratory tract.

Today’s times have thrown us back to the basics of keeping our nasal and respiratory passages clean and disinfected. Yogic and Ayurvedic practices are used on a daily basis for body cleansing for maintenance and better performance.

Jal neti is a natural technique and a daily practice to prevent to avoid respiratory ailments and breathe well. Many office goers and yogis practice it as the first thing in the morning after brushing their teeth and having the first cup of tea or coffee.

What is Jal Neti Kriya? 

Jal Neti is one of the most important “Shatkarmas” or purification methods. 

“Jal Neti is a technique to cleanse the nasal path and for removal of any mucous and blockages. The procedure includes pouring of treated warm water from one nostril and flushing the water out from the other nostril. This cleanses out the nasal passage and allows you to breathe and feel better. It helps patients of Asthma, bronchitis, and sinuses to lead a healthier life.”

People practice it daily as it clears the respiratory tract from dirt and toxins which is hard to remove otherwise by just blowing out your nose. The impurities-clogged sinus cavities can cause infections, inflammation, and respiratory disorders. How to practice Jal Neti Kriya?

It is a very simple method. Use your Jal neti pot with an elongated nozzle or purchase one if you don’t have one.

  • Heat water till it’s Luke-warm, and then pour it into the pot.
  • Add a pinch of salt and stir.
    NOTE: If you have nasal infection, inflammation, or bronchitis currently, then avoid salt and instead use Gur [in Hindi] – Jaggery.
  • Dr. Ved Prakash takes us through the steps-
  • You may use a sitting posture or stand in front of the sink, slightly bent.
  • Tilt your head right and pour insert the Jal Neti Nozzle gently into the left nostril. 
  • Note: The conical part should be inside-enough your left nostril so that water does not flow out from the same nostril.
  • Open your mouth to breathe. Tilt your head and find the position where the water starts flowing out from the other nose and flushes out.
  • Use half the water in the pot and repeat the steps with the other nostril till the water finishes.
  • Expel any water left inside by laughing and expelling out through a strong gush of breath from the mouth. Then let the reminiscent come out from the nostrils. Close your mouth and exhale strongly from the nose letting the gush of air out.

Cleaning your Pot after Use:
Clean your pot with soap water, wipe it, keep it inverted on a shelf, let water drain out, and let the nozzle dry.

Water Gargling

  • Add a pinch of salt in glass filled with Luke-warm water and gargle.
  • Gargling
  • Take a sip of water and keep it in your mouth.
  • Tilt your head backwards and gargle- use breathing out method to keep the water moving in the throat.
  • Spit out the water after a few seconds.
